Sometimes we think we sit at the end of line, the place people end up when they’ve exhausted other avenues for timber procurement. If it’s unusual timber, or you aren’t sure what you need, if it’s local supplies, or more ecologically driven sources many people end up at our doorstep. We can use our extensive networks to find what you need.

The need

In late 2025 Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios & Momentum engineers asked us about roundwood for use in a classroom structure. A reciprocal frame roof that required long straight lengths of structurally sound timber. These brokerage jobs normally come with advice and some development; after all if it was easy to source and easy to use there are other bigger timber suppliers to use.

Investigating the technical details

There were questions of species choices: sweet chestnut coppice or pole-stage Douglas fir being the obvious choices that we knew could be supplied. Questions of structural integrity around the high volume of juvenile wood in small sections that led to some work with Napier University and experimenting with acoustic testing (hitting the wood with a hammer) and grading.

The timber was sourced as close to Bath as possible, from the Woodland Trust, and transport arranged to the fabricator Rakau Timber Framing before installation in Bath as part of the annual Forest of Imagination programme.

Beyond the project

Over the past year we’ve supplied roundwood for a variety of projects, sawn timber into construction projects and samples into the V&A museum. If it’s unusual, if specification comes with queries or a need for some development/testing, if you just aren’t sure what to use, get in touch.
