Sourcing timber! 🪵 this time for @forestofimagination. Twenty of your finest Douglas Fir poles courtesy of our gorgeous pals at the @woodlandtrust. We’ve been working with @fcbstudios, @momentumstructuralengineers, and @rakau_timber_framing to specify and source the timber for a temporary reciprocal frame that acts as a pavilion / classroom within the festival.

It’s our 3rd year supplying timber for this stunner of an event. Held in Bath, the FREE festival combines art, nature, play, and ecology - right up our street. We cannot recommend enough. This year it’s on between 23 Sept - 05 Oct, at the old golf course of Entry Hill. The central theme ‘Imagining the Future of the Forgotten Land’ seeks to respond to the climate emergency by demonstrating a creative proof of concept that reimagines the golf course as a vibrant space that connects art, ecology, and community 🌳✨

It's that time of year again 🍄 We were very excited to find Chicken of the Woods growing right outside our office here in Dartington. But they are not just a delicious treat... Fungi help drive the cycles that underpin the timber supply chain. They decompose wood and organic matter, returning vital nutrients to the soil. Mycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic relationships with tree roots, affecting growth rates, resilience, and even the quality of timber. Pathogenic fungi, on the other hand, can alter forest composition by challenging certain species, which in turn reshapes future timber availability, fungi regulate the balance between decay and renewal processes that determine not just how forests evolve, but how sustainable our timber resources can be.When we think about the future of forestry and timber, we must also think about fungi. 🍄#Forests #Fungi #Timber #EvolvingForests

As an open-book organisation, we want to share some difficult news. Over the last few months we’ve struggled with cash flow, leaving us in the devastating position of having to serve redundancy notices to most of our team. We’ll continue working over the next couple of months to deliver ongoing projects, and Jez will carry Evolving Forests forward from October. This isn’t the end more a forced pause while we regroup, replan, and find new ways to keep our mission alive.The last three years have been incredible, and we’re so grateful for your support. Nothing excites us more than merging trees with technology. We've been enjoying ourselves in the forest, experimenting with Polycam's LiDAR scanner and photogrammetry platform to craft 3D models of wood. With technological advancements, we hope to evaluate timber before cutting it down, helping us make informed decisions and minimize waste. Our goal is to develop a collection of scans featuring unique timber that can be utilised in future projects.

We had an fantastic time at Frame 2025, held in a stunning location complete with hay bales, nestled just below the Iron age Eggardon Hill Fort. We were there showcasing digital scanning of timber, enjoying listening to a talented bunch of speakers and generally hanging out with the timber community.

Brit Valley adventures… It was almost 30°C, the woodland was wildly overgrown, and somehow Cat and Jez managed to get stuck in the undergrowth We were out surveying sites in the Brit Valley in Dorset — checking access, identifying species, estimating ecological condition and productive potential (with a LiDAR iPad no less), and sweating a lot.These sample surveys help us understand the condition of woodlands not currently under management — building a clearer picture of what’s happening across the catchment and how we can support nature recovery without losing social and economic value. More to come… but for now, here’s a behind-the-scenes taste of fieldwork in action.
