SCOPE:

In 2021, Evolving Forests began a journey into documentary filmmaking that culminated in the production of People.Community.Forest, a feature exploring the dynamic relationships between communities and the forests they rely on.

The documentary travels across Nepal, Scotland, Germany, England, and London, highlighting diverse approaches to community forestry and the human stories behind sustainable woodland management. Supported by the Vastern Timber 1% Fund, the film examines how local engagement, stewardship, and forest-based livelihoods shape resilient and thriving ecosystems.

At its core, the project is about people, communities, and forests; showing how humans interact with, care for, and depend on woodland spaces. It blends ecological insight, technical knowledge, and the lived experiences of forest managers and community members, making complex forestry issues accessible and compelling.

DELIVERY:

Our approach to People.Community.Forest combined content expertise, field research, and cinematic storytelling. Working closely with Alice Carfrae - photographer, videographer, and editor - we captured immersive footage across multiple countries, translating real-life experiences into visually rich narratives.

The production process involved:

On-location filming in diverse forests, from remote mountain woodlands in Nepal to community-managed forests in the UK and Germany.

Interviews and observational footage with community members, foresters, and policymakers, bringing authenticity and human perspective to the story.

Integration of technical knowledge with storytelling to communicate sustainable forestry practices in an engaging, relatable way.

The result is a documentary that inspires, educates, and celebrates the role of communities in forest stewardship. It has been shared widely throughout and beyond the forestry sector and stands as a testament to the power of film to convey complex ecological and social systems through human-centered stories.
